The Maplewood Public Library kicked off its annual Winter Reading Challenge this week, encouraging local children to stay engaged with books during the colder months. The six-week program, running through February, aims to combat the winter learning slide while fostering a love of reading. “We’ve seen tremendous enthusiasm from families,” said Head Librarian Sarah Chen. “Last year, participants read over 2,000 books collectively.” Children who read at least 15 minutes daily can earn prizes including bookmarks, stickers, and gift certificates to Miller’s Ice Cream Parlor. The grand prize winner receives a $50 gift card to Hometown Books. The program also features weekly storytimes on Wednesdays at 3:30 PM and Saturday morning craft sessions related to featured books. Local high school students from the National Honor Society volunteer as reading buddies for younger participants. Registration remains open at the library’s front desk. Parents can track their child’s progress using reading logs available in English and Spanish. The challenge concludes with a celebration party on February 28th featuring hot chocolate and certificate presentations.
